PARRA VILLAGE, BARDEZ, GOA
1 March, 2009
The village of Parra is located between the coastal village of Calangute and the market town of Mapusa. Its unique character is reflected in its well-established spatial design alternating between higher level settlements, mud flats, bandhs and udos (groves) on the one side, and low-lying paddy fields, which occupy bulk of the land in the village, on the other.
Besides rice, the village is also known for its vegetable gardens and watermelons. At its northern edge is the Parra hill, thickly forested and home to families of peacocks and egrets. This is also known as Bockyachi Aradi, literally, “the place you can hear cattle egrets call.”
The total area of the village is 507.73 ha. According to the 1991 census, there were 669 households with a total population of 3225 persons. In 2001, this had risen to 873 households with a population of 3814 persons (an addition of 204 households).
According to the Draft RP2021, the density of population in Parra works out to 755 persons per sq.km. However, this figure is misleading, since the density has been worked out including the forest, orchard and paddy areas which are not to be used for development. If one uses the settlement area alone, the density in 2001 works out to 3205 persons per sq.km. This is already quite high. In 2021, the density, assuming an increase in population to 5334 persons, would work out to 4482 persons per sq.km.
